Plants monitor seasons in order to align the transition to reproduction with favourable environmental conditions. We have focused on how long-term temperature cues influences flowering through the process of vernalization. In Arabidopsis, the pathways that determine the need and ability to respond to prolonged cold quantitatively modulate expression of the flowering repressor locus FLC. Molecular analysis of these pathways has led us into the dissection of conserved chromatin mechanisms underlying epigenetic switches.
