In the end the survival of a species all boils down to one thing: can you pass your genes, as quirky as they are, off to the next generation and give them the claws, fangs, and useful sniffers to survive long enough to have children of their own?

Or will your genetic line end in sudden death when a few genetic mutations turn your descendants into slow, lumbering oafs with mis-matched paws and no fighting skills?

Join Seri the Pixel Biologist as we explore Niche, a new genetics survival game being created by Team Niche!

  1. Hi Seri! I know this is an old file, but I actually love this version of the mutation menu more than the current one! It's so much more realistic, and actually gives importance to each creature and their actions. I quite like that you can't just pick your queens and breeding males and have them churn out babies for their entire live while the rest of the tribe just works as slaves to conquer more territory and gather food (and yet somehow the children of creatures that do nothing but breed their entire lives can end up with the same abilities that the actual working creatures have). It's more longwinded and random ffor sure, but trhen so is nature and randomness is the very definition of mutation after all. I like that this game doesn't give you complete control over your creatures as usual, because you are still bound by the laws of nature, even as an almost omnicient god of the niche world. I would absolutely LOVE to play this update, do you know if there's a way to get a working old update or maybe how to play two different versions of the game simultaneously?

  2. In all seriousness I'm very excited to see where the game goes. Especially the ability to mate with carnivores, I hope they keep that ability. Seeing the creatures that result from that is rather exciting! I also love the growing variety of animals that can be found on each new island!

No Seri, that is not what epigenetics is all about.

Think about it this way, mutations affect the gene's DNA sequence (so the DNA is altered).

Epigenetics, on the other hand, does not change the DNA sequence, but rather the expression of that gene is altered. So if your Niche creature has inherited two copies of webbed hind legs, but it is in a very dry and hot environment with no water, an example of epigenetics would be that the webbed hind leg gene would have less expression (or it might be turned off), so the webbed leg gene would not appear, and you would have hind legs, without webbing, even though the creature had the genes to make webbed legs.

It's not your fault though. The menu does not accurately portray epigenetics, and based on the menu, I may have come to the same conclusion as you.

  5. I'm just gonna throw in my two cents… I hate the new test update. Niche was a simple game for all audiences before, but epigenetics change that. It has become way too difficult to play and achieve different traits. I, myself, have stopped playing the game because of this.
